The kinds of moves we do in Brunswick

Brunswick covers three postcodes — 3056 for Brunswick, 3055 for Brunswick West and 3057 for Brunswick East — and the housing changes character street by street. That matters more here than in most suburbs, because what is at your door decides how long the job takes. Most of what we are called to falls into four groups:

• Victorian terraces and workers’ cottages. Narrow frontages, a front door opening more or less straight onto the footpath, and often no off-street parking at all. Hallways are usually the constraint rather than the doorway, so wardrobes and bed bases sometimes have to come apart.
• Warehouse and loft conversions. Brunswick has a lot of former industrial stock turned into apartments and studios. They are excellent to move out of when there is a goods lift and awful when there is not — steep internal stairs, mezzanines and heavy sliding doors are common. Tell us which you have.
• Share houses and single-room moves. A lot of Brunswick moves are one person and one room rather than a whole household. Our man with a van service is usually the sensible option for these.
• Newer apartments along Sydney Road. Booking the lift and a loading bay in advance is the single biggest thing you can do to keep the cost down.

Access and parking worth sorting before the day

• Sydney Road is the difficult one. Tram tracks, clearway restrictions and very little room for a truck to stand legally for any length of time. If you are on it or just off it, tell us early and we will plan where the truck goes and what time we start.
• Brunswick East. Lygon Street and the streets around Nicholson Street are tighter than they look on a map, and the tram runs down Nicholson Street. Parking near the Lygon Street shops fills early.
• Cottages with no driveway. Where there is nowhere to pull in, the distance from the truck to your front door is what drives the time. If a parking permit or a couple of cones can hold a space out the front, it genuinely pays for itself.
• The Upfield line and bike path. Jewell, Brunswick and Anstey stations all sit on the Upfield line, and the bike path runs alongside it. Where a street crosses the path, we need to know before we bring a truck down it.
• Weekends are often easier. Around the Sydney Road and Lygon Street shopping strips a Saturday or Sunday start usually beats a weekday one. We work seven days.
