Most removalist websites will not tell you what anything costs until you have handed over your phone number. We would rather put the numbers on the page. Our rates

• Van and man — from $40 per half hour. Best for a studio or one-bedroom flat, a handful of items, a single piece of furniture or a man with a van job.
• 4.5 tonne truck and two movers — from $55 per half hour. Suits most one and two-bedroom apartment moves.
• 6.5 tonne truck and two movers — from $60 per half hour. The usual choice for a two or three-bedroom house move.

Larger trucks and extra movers are quoted upfront, before the job starts. No surprises on the day.

What comes with the rate

Every truck arrives loaded with furniture blankets, trolleys and straps, and there is no separate charge for using them. Our team is uniformed, and Movers4Melbourne is fully insured. We work seven days a week.

Beds and tables are taken apart and put back together as part of the move. We wrap what needs wrapping.

What changes the price

Two moves that look the same on paper can take very different amounts of time. These are the things that actually move the number:

• How much you are moving. Volume matters more than the number of bedrooms. A sparse three-bedroom house can load faster than a crammed two-bedroom unit.
• Access at both ends. Stairs, lifts, long carries from the truck to the door, and whether we can park close. A third-floor walk-up at one end and a driveway at the other are two different jobs.
• The distance between addresses. Across a suburb is not the same as across the city.
• How many movers you need. More movers costs more per half hour but often finishes sooner, especially where there are stairs.
• Heavy and awkward items. A piano, a full-height fridge or a slate pool table needs the right gear and the right number of hands.

Six ways to bring the cost down

Because we charge by time, anything that saves time saves you money. In our experience these make the most difference:

1. Be completely packed before we arrive. This is the single biggest one. Boxes taped and stacked by the door, nothing loose, drawers empty. We sell moving boxes and packing supplies if you still need them.
2. Reserve the parking. A permit or a couple of witches hats outside both addresses can save a long carry. Your council can tell you what is needed.
3. Book the lift if you are in an apartment. Most buildings require a booking and will not let you use it otherwise. An unbooked lift can cost you an hour standing still.
4. Get rid of what you are not taking first. You pay to move everything that goes on the truck, including the things you will throw out at the other end. We also do rubbish removal if there is a pile to clear.
5. Take apart what you can. Flat-pack furniture, bed frames and table legs travel better in pieces and load faster.
6. Avoid the end of the month if you can. The last weekend of the month is when most leases turn over and it books out first. Midweek is quieter.

What we do not do

We would rather be straight about this than waste your time:

• We do not offer a packing service. We move packed boxes and furniture. We do sell the boxes and supplies if you are packing yourself.
• We do not provide storage. If you have a storage unit arranged, we are happy to move your belongings to or from it.
• We do not move to Western Australia or overseas. Our interstate work covers New South Wales, the ACT and South Australia.

Prices for particular kinds of move

The same hourly rates apply whatever we are moving. What changes is the truck and the crew:

• House removals — whole-home moves, one-bedroom units through to large family homes.
• Apartment and unit moves — lifts, stairs and tight car parks.
• Office removals and commercial relocations — including after hours and weekends so you lose less trading time.
• Furniture removals — from one item to a houseful.
• Piano moving — uprights and grands, with the right equipment.
• Man with a van — small jobs, single items and marketplace pickups.

Interstate moves

Interstate pricing works differently to local work, because it depends on the destination and how much is going. We move to New South Wales, the ACT and South Australia, and we quote those upfront before anything is booked. Tell us where you are going and what is coming and we will give you a number.

Our base is 7/85 Cooper Street, Campbellfield VIC 3061. Our busiest areas are the northern suburbs — Reservoir, Preston, Coburg and Brunswick — and we also work across the western, eastern, south-eastern and inner-city suburbs and regional Victoria.
