Tips for making a Move

Moving is stressful, but if you move to another country, it can be difficult to know where to start. I moved to another country four times in five years and have compiled this checklist to ensure that your move is smooth and you are ready to enter your new home. The most important activities are getting quotes for the different aspects of your move, cancel existing contracts and services and my least favorite package.

Inform your country of origin of your relocation: tax, state of residence and vote by postal mail / proxy. Find out if you still want to contribute to the retirement and social security systems in the home for long-term benefits.

Inform your bank: you may need to use your credit card to transport it until you have set up a local bank account in your new city. Also change your mailing address to someone in your own country, since many banks will not send letters abroad.

Tell your friends and tell them early! Do not let them learn from Facebook. Take some time to organize a farewell party or to organize individual meetings. Plan ahead and look for expat groups like Inter Nations or on Facebook to help you with your location.

Collect currency: you need cash to close the gap between your arrival, create a bank account and transfer international money. Creating a bank account often requires a residence permit and proof of address, so it may take longer than expected.

Your place: when you rent, check your rental agreement and indicate this as quickly as possible. If you have a house, contact a real estate agent in advance to give them time to market the property and find tenants.

Cancel Internet, telephone contracts and other contracts, such as gym membership. If you go to the middle of a contract, you can expect financial penalties. Who said moving was cheap?

Receive quotes for moving and storage companies if necessary. Be sure to get some appointments to see if you get a good deal. Request packaging material through your moving company or online.

Preparation on paper: Determine which documents, such as birth certificates, should go with you and make digital copies of the rest instead of risking sending confidential information. Be sure to check what documents you need for residency / registration in your new country.

Try it: first ask yourself if you should keep it and if you really need it. Lightweight packaging makes things much easier and you can almost always look for what you need in your new home. Use storage as a way to lighten the load and make things wait when you return.

Pack by number: instead of packing in the room, pack up how soon you will need something. Decorative items or extra shoes can be packed immediately, but you can load the cables and important documents you need until the last minute. Label the boxes with numbers and then save a list of items in which the tables are listed. That way you know exactly where things are, but people will not be able to see what’s in each box. Pack a bag of underwear, a toothbrush and supplies for a few days to prevent you from snooping on all your boxes when you arrive.
